Flowering was quick and successful and occurred just slightly earlier than the norm. The summer was very warm and often wet. For mildew control, it was the most demanding vintage in 40 years. Prophylactic spray applications were often doubled over the norm. Some hail damage in Meursault damaged the crop early, and the result was a small but superior crop and subsequent wines in Meursault. August offered relief with very dry and warm weather. A very warm and dry period after August veraison, and even though there were a few days of rain the skins of the grapes were thickened from the heat and sun, and affected little. Cooling temperatures after the 21st spiked the acidity levels and helped to create some of the most elegant wines of the 90's Intermittent rain persisted from the start of harvest on September 15 through October 1, but it was beneficial and added to the must weight of very small thick skinned berries. The result was excellent deep color, sweet silky fruit, fully developed tannins and medium high supporting ripe acidities, racy balanced wines, an excellent vintage |
