Throughout some regions of the Cote the incidence of millerandge, and coulure was common. It was caused by two very cold periods in the Spring, during the second week of May and in early June, which produced frost/snow damage in the lower regions shortly after very warm temperatures in May brought about flowering. The resultant harvest was not what one would expect. The wines are very good, especially in the Cote de Nuits. A summer of fine weather helped to bring this small crop to fruition, with bright deep fruit character, elegance, extract and high levels of both tannin and acidity. This was no doubt helped along by the addition of a good quantity of the small seedless shot berries creating a higher proportion of skin to juice than normal. These are wines for the long haul and will mature much slower than the 1996, 1997, or the 1999 vintage. |
