Review:

An early spring lead into uniform and quick flowering and set the stage for a large harvest, but not as large as 1999 . July was a bit sketchy but August was dry and warm. A very large crop but not as abundant as the 1999 vintage. Some uneven flowering was followed by a variable summer, with some very hot days and extended periods of heat. Green harvesting was often needed. Harvest ran into periods of high winds and stormy weather during September. Many vineyards found some serious incidence of rot. In general, the red wines are medium bodied, short to mid term wines lacking backbone and supportive acidity. Reds are better in the Cote de Nuits than the Cote de Beaune. The white wines suffered slightly less. Some rain before and severe thundershowers during the second week of September threatened the harvest. The size of the crop really mattered here, those who had not thinned their crop had trouble fully ripening grapes, and even more trouble with rot. In general, the quality level progresses to the north with each appellation faring better than their southerly neighbor, and they improve in proper order from village to grand cru level. The red wines are medium bodied lighter in color than the 1999's and they lack some of the grip and certainly the acidity. They are soft wines. The earlier picked Chardonnay escaped the rain and produced some very good wine, and for Chablis the wines were some of he best.
